RUST, OXIDATION, CORROSION...

This series of works is about the aesthetics of decay. The main art medium is rust, oxidation of iron and its corrosion as the result. While painting it will be created artificially by steering the spontaneous oxidation process into the artistic direction.

Working on rust paintings is a time consuming and laborious process. Individual parts of the compositions will be executed with different iron oxides and treated differently. Each step of oxidation should “work on” for several days. Numerous corrections must be done, often with natural materials such as water or salt. This results in different colours, textures and structures.

Balancing between the vision of the future art piece and the unpredictable behaviour of the art medium makes the process and its result fascinating. The finished rust patterns continue to have a life of their own, the process of corrosion goes on.

The geometric shapes of the rust paintings are the result of numerous artistic research and inspiration from the urban environment, such as rust elements in the surroundings, objects of futuristic architecture and contemporary sculpture.
